8-bit: My immediate thought was that it looks like it's collapsing in on itself, but I've really come to like it because a lot of old sprites do actually look like that. It's very easy to picture this in an actual game of some sort.
Dimensional: That dark blue color creates a great contrast with the white without being too harsh on the eyes, and the purple accents help break up the monotony a bit. I really get the impression this is glowing.

What's interesting about the 8-bit one is that unlike many other 8-bit pets, which tend to be shown from the side and have simplistic designs, this one is shown from an angle and has a fairly complex design. Because of this, it almost seems more like an "enemy" sprite rather than a PC sprite.
