I love Hissi, I love egypt :) And this makes me love them even more, especially desert. The whole design is simple, but just what I like. I might consider getting a desert one~

As someone else alluded to earlier in the thread, Egypt's handful of female pharaohs often did wear beards and present themselves as male, because 'pharaoh' was a male role regardless of the gender of the person actually filling it. (This kind of occupational gender-bending still happens in some tribal African cultures and among the Inuit and, of course, theatre people.) So I think this is actually pretty cool, because Neopets can never have enough gender-bending; anyway, at the end of the day this Hissi is less gender-marked than the Desert Chomby and Ixi, for example, and definitely less gender-marked than the Desert Kau, which is based on Het-Heru, one of the girliest gods in the pantheon.
And it's less gender specific than the vast majority of usul colours too. ;)

I remeber seeing beards on the female pharaohs in photos of Egyptain artwork. I just thought it was part of the pharoah outfit; I never thought it was because the role was considered male only. At least they were more willing to bend the rules (and have a woman dressed in male attire) than some other cultures. :P

I don't like the desert hissi, might grow on me though. Like a symbiosis. A hissymbiosis. I've always been fond of striped, so that gets some form of thumbs up related metaphor.

gomababe wrote:I kinda like Desert to be honest, I agree that it looks too busy with the beard {girls never wore beards even in ancient egypt TNT ><}. It would've looked nicer as a Royal though. As for the Striped TAKE IT AWAY!!! i was hoping for something a little more original, the hissi had so much potential for a decent striped colour and TNT screwed it up. Ah well, at least Queza's proper colour's Faerie, so I don't have to worry about this too much.
i think there was one queen who did - can't remember her name.

Desert - love it
Striped - meh ¬¬

Hatshepsut. But then, she kind of pretended to be male most of the time, because all other rulers of ancient Egypt were male and she didn't want people to challenge her authority (as Twofold Black said earlier). If there were other queens I don't know about them.

I think the desert is nice. I love that it's a cobra. It's a little too busy, I guess, but it still looks good.

Cleopatra was a Queen! I don't think she wore the beard though... But yeah, those were the only two Queens of Egypt that I know of...

Oh, sorry Ty :) I only just now started reading the thread and skimmed through it.

As for Cleopatra - she was a lot later, and was co-ruler with her brothers. And this line from her Wikipedia article may explain some things: "By August 51 BCE she was dropping his name from official documents, which flew in the face of Ptolemaic tradition that female rulers be subordinate to male co-rulers."

I think there might have been a female pharaoh named Hatshe something...I don't know why I think that though. Certainly not from any posts I've seen here...

Hehe, just kidding Ty. :P

Hatshepsut was far and away the most successful and clearly documented. I think the earliest confirmed female pharaoh was Neferusobek, whose reign was brief, and whose actual identity is unclear. One of Seti II's wives, Tewosret, took possession of the throne more or less the way Hatshepsut did, by outliving a young male co-regent. There are probably a couple I'm missing, plus a handful of more dubious cases: women who may or may not have ruled Egypt and a rulers of Egypt who may or may not have been women. Notably, Nefertiti rose to a position of at least borderline co-regency with Akhenaten while he was alive, and after his death may have ruled for a while under the name Smenkhare.

Edit: Oh, and I seem to recall that there were some female religious figures with a lot of political power when Egypt was under Nubian rule, but I don't know off the top of my head if there was an actual pharaoh among the bunch. I'm referring here entirely to pharaohs, of course -- kings, or queen-regents, or what have you, rather than queens as the term is generally used with reference to ancient Egyptian royalty, which is a completely different job. Unless you're Nefertiti.

I'm not really a Hissi fan but I adore everything Lost Desert, and I have to say the color came out quite nicely. The cobra thing is awesome, reminds of the movie Aladin when Jafar turned into a cobra and tried to kill him. -shifty eyes- I mean...reminds me of stuff that cool people who are too mature to love disney would like. Yeah...that.

As for striped...well...there are stripes. Yup.

The desert is pretty nice! That beard is indeed kinda strange.. but it doesn't ruin this color at all.

The striped is so plain.. I coulnd't care less.. and like someone said, it looks more like spots than stripes. :?

I hadnt even noticed the beard on the desert hissi until I read this thread ._.'' It looks awkward, but it isnt very noticeable and the pet itself makes it up for it. The concept is great, its good the see the cobra idea wont be wasted. Its another adition to the desert colour as well. 9/10, I say :)

The striped.... dissapointed because of how cool it could have been. I don't even like the shades used on it = /
