Mr. Black, I'm tired of Tim Burton too. I've enjoyed a few of his films -- mostly because of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter -- but he seems to allllways do the exact same thing. The plots may vary, but the atmosphere of all of his films has started to feel exactly the same. It wouldn't even take me ten seconds of a preview to recognize his stamp. It's fine to have a very distinctive style as a director, but Burton has no subtlety. I always feel bludgeoned with his particular brand of plasticky "quirky" fairy tale weirdness which he seems to try to hard to attain and maintain. Ugh.

I'll probably watch it online. Much as the story is fun, I've never been particularly fond of Sweeney Todd as a musical, and I don't want to pay for something that would potentially annoy me hugely.

In the great Venn Diagram of fandom, you and I, Figment, are the only two people I've ever known to occupy the tiny slice of the Gaiman circle that doesn't overlap the Burton circle. I cling to you. In fairness to Burton, he has his moments -- just not many since 1990, and that nearly all of his work since then has been okay pastiche of the earlier stuff drags said earlier stuff down.

I love the Sweeney Todd musical, which makes this particularly alarming for me. I grew up on a diet of Sondheim, and from my perspective as a weird guy Sweeney Todd is his best work. For my admittedly twisted purposes, it is possibly the finest musical ever written. I even like the coloratura bits. I usually hate the coloratura bits. And as much as I adore Helena Bonham Carter, I'm not sure I'm interested in a big-ticket interpretation of Mrs. Lovett by anyone other than Angela Lansbury. She is iconic. Community productions are one thing, one transitory thing; this is a movie, and it will be around forever.

I will go anywhere Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham Carter go, and Sacha Baron Cohen is beautifully cast here ... but god, I'm tired of Tim Burton, and while I freely acknowledge that Johnny Depp is better than I want to give him credit for, he's no George Hearn.
As usual, you have summed up my every thought on this. I will see it, because Helena Bonham Carter is my biggest girl-crush, and well, it's a lovely story (in that... not so lovely kind of way) but... bleh. I'm really not a fan of Tim Burton anymore, and I've never had the same huge fangirly tendancies towards Mr. Depp that people seem to. My favorite movie with him in it is What's Eating Gilbert Grape, which is both under appreciated and not usually the first thing people think of when they hear Johnny Depp.

Still. Helena Bonham Carter is hot, and that's reason enough to see a movie for me.

I've been infatuated with him since 21 Jump Street. No, I'm not that old, but I did watch reruns just to stare. My crush began with Benny and Joon, I do believe. I'd rather see him popular than so unpopular that he doesn't make any movies. And alive. A few of my favorite actors have died over the past couple years, so alive is good.

Ooh, the youtubes have been kind to me. I've found both the original movie version (George Hearn and Angela Lansbury, who is just amazing) and a concert version with George Hearn and Patty LuPone (who, although most people love her, I'm not that fond of her Lovett) on youtube, and I figure I shall share with you all so you can watch this most wonderful of musicals if you've not seen it before.

The only movie I have to see this winter is The Golden Compass, but this also looks great, so I'll fit it in there, too. ;)

I have very little love for Burton, as like Figment said, it's like watching the same thing over and over. And I don't particularly enjoy his stuff in the first place, despite its visual grandeur. But Alan Rickman, Helena Bonhaman and Depp potentially singing? Hell yes! I'll see it just for that.

Also, I'm aware of the piece as Kevin Smith has a song from it featured in his Jersey Girl (and I'm yet to miss any movie Smith made).

I'll be sure to go through some of the links Illuen posted to check the rest of the songs just to know what to expect.

So freaking good. For those of you who have Netflix, you can get it off there. There's also a CD, which has Len Cariou in the role of Sweeney; for the purposes of audio recordings I actually prefer him slightly to Hearn, but when you're actually watching a performance Hearn is better.

Edit: As Sweeney Todd, anyway. The thought of a Hearn Fredrik Egerman chills me to my bones.

I agree with you 100%. I have both the DVD and both CDs (the original cast recording and the 2005 cast recording) and Cariou is my absolute favorite. Hearn has this tendancy to get rather yelly, which is a shame in some songs, because it ruins them (you can see in the video, in The Judge's Return. He totally covers Lansbury's singing, which is a shame, as A) they're song amazing and B) it is rather pivotal to her character).

If I can manage to find my CDs, I can put a track or two on YSI for y'all.
