Neocolours Christmas Card Exchange?

Post by Jessi »

I'm not sure if this idea will take off, but _I_ want to do it, so I figure it couldn't hurt to ask.

I was thinking it would be fun to do an NC Christmas/Holiday card exchange, and I'm volunteering to run such an exchange if people are interested. Basically, I would be willing to collect the address of anyone who wants to participate (either via PM or e-mail if you're nervous about putting your address in a PM), then I would PM the list of addresses to each participant, and we would all send cards to each other!

I do this with my LJ friends every year, and it's tons of fun to get different cards - some homemade, some not, some in German, etc xD If people are worried about sending cards overseas, perhaps we could do two different exchanges, one for the US/Canada and one for the UK? I'm not concerned about this myself, as sending cards over the ocean is relatively cheap, but it might be a second option.

Obviously, to do this means people have to be willing to hand out their address to various NCers. I feel then, that if we do this, there should be a posting/time requirement for members to participate in - that way we know some older members are posting as opposed to ones that we don't know very well.

So. What does everyone think? Good idea? Awful? I would really love to do it, but of course I would like other opinions on it first ^_~

I like the idea. I've never gotten around to sending xmas cards before but I think this would be a good reason to start. And getting a whole stack of cards from friends would be awesome.

I send all of my Christmas cards on December 10th max, so please PM me BEFORE THIS DATE if you want to swap with me =D

I'm also doing one on Neopets, for the third year. I love it, it's awesome.

Well if we're going to do this, I would like to have everyone's information sent out by December 1st, as I also like to send my cards early :3 So that gives us enough time to figure out who wants to do it, have everyone PM me their info, and for me to pass it out!

I will give a few days to see how many people are interested first, then start 'signups' right after Thanksgiving - how does that sound? :D

I would love to do this! Maybe some of you who like sending cards will become regular penpal exchangees with me. I loooove getting mail, and really like making my own cards. I might not be able to handmake every card if I send out a lot, but would be very enthusiastic about participating in such a thing. Mail = joy and light and goodness on all ends!

I buy my cards, but I try to put as much thoughts as I can while writing them.

I have some leftovers from last year, and I'll go and try to get a decent stamp budget?

Cards?! CARDS?! Now you're talkin'! You've never seen anything until you've gotten one of Nanabobo's homemade super cards of all selections! Sending Christmas cards to Neocolours residents would be great fun! If enough people agree, I'd gladly do it!

Sounds like fun, I'd do it. :D Hope I have enough stamps.

Making some cards wont be too difficult, but I'm awful at thinking up things to write. I'll try, though.

I would love to participate in this, and don't especially mind sending overseas.

I have no artistic skills, but will spiff up a store-bought card and write a nice message. Maybe there will even be a bookmark inside.

Just an idea: When the person PMs you their address, it might be good if they include if there is anything they really don't want to receive. I do card swaps on another forum, and people generally say that they don't want religious cards or say "Christmas" cards if they don't celebrate Christmas to avoid any awkward religion-related things. Though I'm not sure that it would be as much of an issue with people here as it is for people there.

Hmm, this does sound rather like fun. I handmake all of my Christmas cards though, so I'm not sure I could send out too many - I already have quite a number to make for family and friends and no inspiration! That said, I do have lots of leftover shop-bought cards which would allow me to participate more fully.

I'm inclined to agree with Meghan about the religious thing mind. In the past I received a Christmas card with full a bible passage from an über-conservatively Christian 'friend' which felt uncomfortably like proselytising given that he knows I'm an avowed atheist. I personally try to tailor my cards a bit to the recipient, such as not giving my Christian grandfather an overly commercialised one etc.

Which is a long way of saying that yes, I think it would be a good idea to give some sort of indication. Though I apologise in advance if I slip up and put "Merry Christmas" in absolutely every card - over here it's kind of unheard of to object to the term Christmas. If you're celebrating it, you use the name. If you're not, you just get on with your life and probably aren't receiving Christmas cards ;0) My Hindu friend in school certainly gave me cards saying "Merry Christmas" and we gave the same back to her.

Well, I agree with both FiG and E, but the reason I didn't add it is because I figured it was a given... considering I'm well, Jewish, and was offering to run a Christmas card swap :P

I don't care about cards that say Merry Christmas on them, but yes, i'll put that in the final 'form' for you all to fill out and PM me. Merry Christmas is fine (I personally only buy cards that say happy holidays, but that's just me xD) but I too don't want a card about Jesus and bibles and holy births and virgins.
