Ahh, it's one of those sneaky gay marriage bans that bans common law marriage too, huh? That's how the law in Ohio worked 4 years ago. They're good at covering that up, heh.

What fun! I just got back from voting and finishing a chilli dog from Dairy Queen. I got a sticker. I like stickers. I'm sorry. :( I'm very disappointed that there weren't cookies and orange juice though. 12 pm is obscenely early for me to be out and about. Heh.

I voted to allow a casino in Ohio. The main controversy is that through some legal loopholes the casino will get out of paying any taxes, which I believe to be bull. The government loves money too much to let that happen. I voted to crackdown on payday lenders and keep changes that limit interest rates from 176 freaking percent to 28 and loan amounts to $500. On the whole, the people I know who use them are just digging themselves even deeper into debt. In gambling and the lottery, if you have one iota of sense, you know you're going to lose money more often then not and most loan sharks and bookies have lower interest rates. There was stuff about water usage rights for property owners and timelines for submitting stuff to the secretary of state. There was also a bill for environmental protection, which sounded nice at first but that I voted against because it placed a cap on the maximum funds spent and much of it seemed to concern farms and subsidies. The terminology was confusing and weird. I may have been wrong. Onoes.

On the issues and for the candidates I knew nothing about, I didn't vote. I always like how there's so many people up for office running against NO ONE else.

I also come from the income tax, marijuana, and greyhound racing propositions state. :)

I managed to work out an arrangement with my parents where I got to vote after all... turned out we'd had an enormous miscommunication. But it all worked out in the end! No lines at all to vote because we went at off-time; I didn't even have to show my driver's license for more than a quick look when they mixed me up with someone else on my street who shares my first name *headwall*.

I thought for sure there'd be tons of things I didn't know enough about to vote on, but everything on the ballot was either something I'd been following in the news or something with a grand total of one candidate to vote for. ^^; I left some of those blank, because, well... obscure random office is obscure.

Yup. I went to a talk at a conference once by some people who had managed to get a huge dataset about payday lenders and their clients and payday lending is a horrible, horrible way to go, financially.

It turns out that people who take out pawnshop loans actually do a lot better than people who take out payday loans. I guess you're more likely to pay a loan back if you don't get your TV back until you do...

I think the best thing about this day being over will be that I won't see anyone standing on corners with Yes on 8 signs. It's not good for my blood pressure. Derek and I spent almost the entirety of my birthday celebration discussing how they're hateful liars. I'd like that to at least be over.

All you Americans had better go crazy out there. I'm going to be staying up for results as long as it takes (with Ali-From-Downstairs, two laptops and a couple of cans of Relentless). I'm already jittery and I haven't touched the caffeine yet.

Yes, so I'm a Brit. So what?

Most of the yes on 8 people near work are old or look like rednecks.

The Yes on 8 people I've seen look perfectly normal. Most of the normal-looking parents had their kids with them this weekend. I just looooove them teaching their kids to be bigots, but it wouldn't be okay if the school tried to teach them to be tolerant! We also had a very normal-looking couple come to our door with Yes pamphlets, but we were pantsless (because we're lazy pro-gay demons, see) so we didn't answer the door. If I'da known they were Yes asses, I'da put on pants just to see how long I could argue with them. Derek and I come up with sooooo many questions we just want to ask them, if we could only pin some down (or tie some up, staple some to a wall, whatever) to ask 'em.

Tom Leykis's radio show (kind of a shock jock, but with some good points, as far as I'm concerned) replayed this last night, and I hope plenty of people listened to it. That youtube link cuts off the end where he play a Yes on 8 commercial and shouts "but what is it! what is prop 8! what is it!" periodically. Memorable, at least. ^_~

Indiana is a pretty boring state to vote in I guess. I just got to vote for candidates (most of whom I didn't really know/care about). No amendments or anything fancy like that. At least the line was short and I was in and out in under 10 minutes.

Actually, I think it would have been more fun to NOT put pants on and then see how long you could argue with them.

(I'm told that nudity works well for getting rid of Jehovah's Witnesses, too.)

I was telling Ty that watching the yes-on-prop-8 videos made me cry, so I've forbidden myself from watching any of it, heh. But then, even watching Pro-Obama videos is making me cry, and I naturally voted for him!

I remember being angry at the results of the last election, but this election I'm just PASSIONATE about everything!

Lindsey's new job actually let people leave while staying clocked in to go vote, to make sure all their employees did - it was a nice tactic, I think :D So Lindsey was able to vote earlier this afternoon without having to wait in the lines at 5 PM - which I'm sure will be insane.

I'm a permanent absentee voter, but I decided to hand mine in today rather than mailing it. (I didn't trust the mail to not lose it somehow.)

California should be in the bag for Obama, but I'm worried about Prop 8--it's depressing how many "Yes" signs I see around my neighborhood. It was nicer being in Santa Cruz the week before last...there were "No on Prop 8" signs in soooo many yards. It made me think that maybe my entire state isn't full of bigots.

I think one of my closer friends voted yes, though. Which is extremely depressing. I did my best, but you can only argue with people so much, I guess.

EDIT: Ugh, Ty, that link just makes me sad (and a little sick). Because logic doesn't work when you're talking to someone with a closed mind. "So you're in favor of slurs, is that what you're saying?"

I just got back from voting (also, first election ever). I voted straight democrat for the first part, and then yes or no to retaining judges depending on how funny their names were (I don't know anything about this stuff). The only other thing we had was to abolish some township thing which was confusingly worded. :/ Indiana's no fun.

Can I ask some very stupid questions?

1. What does it mean when a broadcasting network "calls a state"?
2. Why is it nothing to worry about if one side is behind at this point? Is it because there's some reason why the votes they've collected aren't representative of everyone?

It's kind of like if all the Tory safe seats were to return their votes first before any marginals, Labour or Lib Dem safe seats returned. It's not meaningful until there's a broader spectrum starting to come through. Right now it's just one state each way, which is far too early to really say anything.

Also, I could swear I saw you on the opposite platform at the Metrocentre train station today.
