They should release more colors to make up for it. ::coughbloodredcough::

Re: New Pet! The Sage!
I laughed when I saw the name change as Mahar is an old friend of mines last name. So now when i see that name I always think of him...not a pet.
Re: New Pet! The Sage!
I like the name change, and think it was a good idea. The point about there already being too many pets whose names begin with M aside, I think that "mahar" sounds much less harsh than "sage," more mysterious and certainly less common. I also appreciate the way the staff justified the name change into the story of the pet and the site -- nice touch.

Re: New Pet! The Sage!
Mahar sounds a bit belligerent and Arabic (than again I'm reading it the way a Croat would read it: M-ah-arr) - not something I connect with the way pet looks like but I'm not bothered either way. I'm more curious behind the reasons for the change (the whole Comments are disabled for this post! intrigues me). Does some obscure petsite already uses name Sage?
Re: New Pet! The Sage! (Renamed the Mahar)
In Canada, there have been a scandal involving a dude called MAHer arAR.
And, sorry, but seeing a Mahar makes me think of that.
Do. Not. Like.

There was a reason for the name change, actually. When they made it, it wasn't realized that 4chan has a field sage meme (or something having to do with sages and fields anyway), and they didn't want to end up under fire again for something unintentional.
I live in canada too, and I didn't connect it to that at all.

What it makes puts me in mind of is Mahir. (Who has left his 'postmodern' phase, as an intartubes fad, and simply become obscure. Sweet Christ, I can't believe it's been eight years.) I didn't care for the name Sage at first, but it grew on me, and this I don't care for at all -- not for this pet, though in the abstract I consider it a fine name. I suspect it's a short, altered form of Mahatma, which makes me like it a little better, but I would have preferred something like Savant if they were going to go that route.

It reminds me of the Maher Arar case too, which was very sad. =(
I'll have to disagree about the antrhopology label. Anthropo refers to humans (well, man, actually :/), not any sentient being. I'd much rather the news had referred to social scientist, linguist, cultural expert, or something like that. Although, I might only be so nitpicky because I'm in anthropology.
The creature looks like it's from Eastern Asia and Mahar doesn't sound like a name from there (to my knowledge). It's not an awful name to me, but it's far from the first thing I would think of for this dragon. I don't think the name is supposed to refer to "Mahatma." Maha means great, and atma means soul. So if it was meant to be take that way, Mahar would mean "Great Ar," whatever that is.

If you're ever in doubt, throw a pepper in the air. If it fails to come down, you have gone mad, so don't trust in anything.

Subeta isn't where I go for deep etymological insight or even correct spelling (Saggitarius, I'm lookin' at you). I assume, operating still under the theory that Mahar is a corruption of Mahatma, that whoever devised it just knocked off the back half of the word and added an R with no regard for how the resulting word analyses.yvonne_l_d wrote:I don't think the name is supposed to refer to "Mahatma." This is also why I wouldn't expect them to use the correct term, which is sophontology.
Re: New Pet! The Sage! (Renamed the Mahar)
Aqua is right about the reason.
The first name was my idea, and I didn't want people targeted because of me. When it was pointed out, I admit I was in a bit of a rush to find a new suitable name, so no, I didn't think all that much about the semantics of it. You're right in that I knocked off the back half of a word, but the word in question would be maharishi. I thought the definition worked for what I felt the personality of the pet was, and I also thought Mahar sounded pretty good.I assume, operating still under the theory that Mahar is a corruption of Mahatma, that whoever devised it just knocked off the back half of the word and added an R with no regard for how the resulting word analyses.
Re: New Pet! The Sage! (Renamed the Mahar)
Wow. I've been a 4chan lurker for longer than I really have any reason to be, and I didn't even connect the two until you just mentioned it. Probably because I was pronouncing this pet's name like the herb rather than the way 2/4chan's sage is pronounced (sah-gay - it's from the Japanese sageru).Aqua wrote:There was a reason for the name change, actually. I don't mind Mahar. It makes me think of the name Mahavir, which I guess is appropriate considering where this new name comes from. But now I have an uncontrollable urge to play Miss Management, thanks.

Oh, maharishi. That makes more sense, and like an idiot I didn't think of it at all. I would have preferred the whole word, which I find more aesthetically pleasing than this shortened version.Teera wrote:You're right in that I knocked off the back half of a word, but the word in question would be maharishi. Oh, thank you, for making me not alone in connecting that. I could... I KISS YOU!... or something.Twofold Black wrote:What it makes puts me in mind of is Mahir. The concept of this critter as spackled in jewels and the Indian-derived name makes me think of a bit from The Secret Garden in which a Rajah is described as covered in precious gems. Because sometimes, when you're six years old and learning a word, all sorts of other things get attached to their definition.

But will they rename the Dragon? It's such a common word.

Re: New Pet! The Sage! (Renamed the Mahar)
I like the name a lot better, now that I know that. Even though it's from a different culture that this type of dragon, the meaning fits really well. Personally, I would have liked a bit more of the word, though, since I love titles and names with relevant meanings. Maharis or Maharish would have conveyed the meaning more. I'm not complaining though, as the species name is not the most important thing for me.Teera wrote:When it was pointed out, I admit I was in a bit of a rush to find a new suitable name, so no, I didn't think all that much about the semantics of it.
