Mods and Style Suggestions

Post by Jazzy »

Right. I know people would like certain mods to be installed on this board- currently, we only have EasyMOD and the gender mod. If you'd like others (say, a quick reply mod) then comment with the following:
- what it is and why we should have it
- a link to download it
- whether the link you've posted is EasyMOD compliant (I'm more likely to install these, because they're much quicker to do, though manual mods are fine).

If you don't provide a link, I'm not going to go searching for them (some of these are impossible to google for because of the vagueness of their names), but you can see if someone else around here will.

As for styles, comment with a name and where to download them. I am not going to install any styles for the time being but will instead, if this place becomes permanent, hold a poll where people can pick another two to go with subSilver (which we'll be hanging onto if only because it's so simple to play with). I'd like to see which styles you actually want, rather than planning a poll with hundreds of options.

edit: I forgot to mention this originally- we're running phpBB version 2.0.19; mods for any of version 2 ought to be okay (unless they say otherwise) but mods for version 1 are not.

I think these two would be good, but I'm not sure where they come from:
Quick Reply - Saves time on slower computers/connections since it's one less page to load.

Spoiler Tags - For blacking out text that may spoiler various media for people. It's innevitable that we'll talk about a movie or a book in a thread not themed after said movie or book, and possibly spoil some content for those who haven't read it yet. It's happened in the past at NC proper. Will this code do? http://www.sf-fan.de/phpBB/files/spoiler.mod Also, if we have a few different themes in the future, they might not all have the same background colour, so we wouldn't necessarily just be able to make the font match the background for everyone.

I quite like this theme, I use it elsewhere, though in customized colours: http://www.forumimages.com/modules.php? ... led&lid=44

That site has lots of other themes too..

As for mods, quickreply would be nice. :P It makes replying easier and quicker (obviously). Don't think either are easymod able though.

I very liked the Alexis theme on the old temp forum. It looks a lot like the orignal NC Forums. I think it only comes in Orange/Green/Red. Here is a link to the green one: http://www.forumimages.com/modules.php? ... led&lid=88

You want to be careful with the spoiler tags, I think. I don't know if it's the same thing they used at Kingdom of Loathing, but for a long time there if someone didn't close the tag it would break the whole page.

I really like the non-expanded eos theme and used it on the "forumforfree" NC.

Edit: Okay, I think this is the proper "non-nuke" eos theme, Jazzy:

Or this; both should work...

I'm not very picky about my themes, but any with a white background on the posts are good for me. =) I liked Sam's edited version of Alexis (it was different from the temp forum's Alexis at least) and would love to have something like that back.

sterling- that's for phpBB nuke (an edited form of phpBB, I believe); could you possibly find a phpBB version?

I'm not too keen on heavily editing Alexis, tiel- I remember only too well what happened when sam did something involving white during beta testing of the new theme; the entire forum disappeared and while he brought it back, I wouldn't have had a clue how to. Can you find a theme with a white background that you like?

I haven't looked at styles yet- ordinary Alexis would suit me, though I did like the modified one. It doesn't feel like NC at the moment without Alexis.

However, I have one mod which I would like, one which allows you to see the PM you are replying to when writing it (like the topic review at the bottom of a page). http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=326286

I'm looking Jazzy. =)

As long as I'm going through pages and pages of styles, were there any other kinds others would like to request?

I'll edit as I find more I like, and then you can use whichever one others like as well.

http://www.phpbbstyles.com/viewtopic.php?t=350 - Morpheous Demo (Gray version)

But, while I'm here, these are ones I like, but wouldnt use because of the offwhite background.

I'd also like to see the Quick Reply mod, I found that really handy on the freeforums board.

I'd personally use any style of Alexis available.

I'm not savvy enough to know if this is a theme based thing or a mod based thing or what, but I'm putting this here in case anyone more savvy knows...

Is there any way of making it more obvious when you're logged out? On the old new boards it was fine because logged in I had a theme with a black background, so it was pretty damn obvious. But here there's no difference. And I don't think I'm the only person having trouble staying logged in - just look at the number of "sorry, that was me" posts we've got, far more than ever before. So some sort of obviously visual clue would be nice, more obvious than "log in to check your private message/you have no new messages" currently is.

Another forum I'm on has the username/password fields right across the top of the forum if you visit unlogged in, which makes it very obvious when I've been logged out. Anyone have any idea if this is likely mod or theme based?

I'm sure there's a way of stopping guest posts altogether. I know the only reason we didn't do it before was because of Feathercircle.

But if you use another style it's pretty obvious.

We could make the default style have a big ugly image that says "YOU AREN"T LOGGED IN!!!oneoneohnoes" at the top. I think that'd make it fairly obvious.
And yeah, there's a button you can click that turns off guest posts in the admin panel.

Is there a pretty tye-dyed version of the theme we're currently using? I'd like it in tye-dye. If not, I could make the images and maybe do the codes, but I'm not too familiar with the codes for this I think....
