Fan Sites (specific part of the new Hub)

Post by Fjorab_Teke »

I figured with the Hub topic being kind-of older now, i'd make the Fan Sites announcement its own post since it may well warrant it both in magnitude and discussion.

They've just updated the news, and YES, Fan Sites ARE off-Neo websites! The two main ones i trust are indeed among the first listed.

So, do you think our beloved Neocolours has a shot, or would you all rather keep this place a bit under the radar? I am torn - i think this place deserves recognition for being awesome, but on the other hand i left another beloved forum because of a surge in popularity - the result being a huge crowd of otherwise nice people mixed with a flood of trollish n00bs.

And of course, we often post topics that are very much NOT Neopets ToS-friendly.

Ideas? Hopes? Concerns?

I would love to see NC featured, assuming of course that we don't have to start minding our tongues or anything else drastic.

While I think there could be a surge of people, the forums have also been pretty quiet. I think some new blood and activity would be awesome (though it is just as likely I'll regret that statement).

I think we have an awesome site that serves a very real need in the Neopets community, and I'd love to be able to direct people here.

There would probably be downsides, a sleepy community doesn't need much moderating for instance, and an active one would, but I'd also like to see the fiery discussions come back as they might with new users.

On the one hand, there really isn't all that much Neopets-related discussion here anymore, since so many of the people who are still around no longer play.

On the other hand, a link from Neopets might be a good way to change that.

I thought of NC too. But would they feature a site that isn't 100% dedicated to Neo?

You probably will, Tiel. My next thought is that it would bring the "wrong" age demographic here. Not that 13 and under isn't allowed, but an influx of young kids bothers me. Would they drastically change the Neocolours climate with improper grammar, twitter spam, and the like? *insert Generation 'Me' stereotype here*.

Maybe I'm being too cynical. I would hope that it would bring a more mature audience that the forum could relate to. We're too quiet these days.

That would be awesome, but I see three major problems:

1. We'd need to apply to COPPA's rules - no one under 13. Also, no cursing - old posts that contain cursing would have to be edited or removed.

2. There would be some problems with the fact that we're attached to Subeta as well.

3. I'm not sure they'd want to feature a website that critiques their own art. xD

I didn't think about that. Besides having to make sure we comply with COPPA, we would be forbidden to:

"Publish, transmit or link to content that is: unlawful; threatening; harmful; abusive; pornographic or includes nudity; offensive; harassing; excessively violent; tortuous; defamatory; invasive of another's privacy, publicity, copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, contract or other rights; false or misleading; obscene; vulgar; libelous; hateful; or discriminatory (including, without limitations, content pertaining to gambling, alcohol, pornography, drugs, smoking, medications or medical procedures, illegal activity, activities promoting or condoning Internet abuse.)"

Some of those are reasonable, but no posts or links relating to gambling, alcohol, medications, or medical procedures? Good grief.

I agree these forums are very quiet compared to what they were in the past, but I vote no.

I vote no for the above-stated reasons. But if you do decide to apply, please give us a heads-up so that we can go back and edit some posts that we may not want the general Neo community to read. :)

Just so people are aware, the mods and I are discussing this at the moment, but the current consensus seems to be that we are likely to submit the site (not everyone has replied yet, but it's unanimous thus far). I would hold a public discussion, but it's very difficult to do properly, because not every aspect of the agreement is appropriate to discuss publicly.

There are some things I'd like to specifically respond to:
- We have no intention of becoming censors. The majority of things that are banned are things we have never offered a platform to here (hacks, illegal activities, etc), while the rest are currently not discussed commonly because the site is too quiet. Or were never really that big a deal...how much do we really talk about alcohol except in passing? I also suspect with things like medical procedures they wouldn't have a problem with, for example "I'm having eye surgery tomorrow, wish me luck!", I think it's more to avoid letting Neopets forums have bluelight forums-style spinoffs where people essentially recommend medications to each other, or attempt to sell them.

- COPPA does not prevent under 13s from signing up to forums. It prevents them from doing so without parental permission; it's up to the site to implement a means of getting parental permission. It's also not guaranteed that under 13s on Neopets are even being shown the fansite links, given how much of the site is already blocked.

- I don't think Subeta is a problem. Neopets made a Pink Poogle Toy item referencing the website back at the point when PPT was pretty much the largest Subeta fansite around (boy, I feel old - do PPT even cover Subeta nowadays?)

- I would suggest to all members that you ought to remember that everything posted on the forums is already publicly visible to anyone on the Internet who chooses to come here. This website is indexed by Google, linked by some other fansites, and widely known among Neopets users already. Almost all of the forums on this site are visible to bots and unregistered users. If you're saying things you don't want the general Neo community to read (I would be curious to know what sort of thing that is) you might want to consider whether a publicly-visible forum is the right place to be doing so even if the site is not listed as an official fansite on Neopets. I know that's likely to bring greater visibility, but this site is not particularly private as it is.

I agree with Jazzy; there's nothing that's been said that the general Neopets community shouldn't be reading, considering random strangers can sign up for the board at any time xD That being said, however, we have had topics on things like... penis-like objects, shaving your privates, sexuality (which isn't really dirty but you know), politics, and swearing always ends up in a few posts - so that's the kind of thing I'm worried about with Neopets even accepting the site. I like that the site has no intention of being censored, but at the same time I can see that being used against us from a Neopets PTB standpoint.

Weirdly, none of that (politics, abstract discussion of sexuality) is actually specifically banned :D Swearing might be, but we're a lot less profane than we used to be, and it's all down to interpretation anyway - ie, whether swearing counts as either "vulgar" or "obscene", which I'm not certain either way. (Oddly-shaped objects...well, if you're seeing anything in those, you're the one with the dirty mind, that's just a gwontek fruit! Not obscene at all!)

There is of course a chance that they'll take one look at the forums and say "nope." but I figure it's worth a try rather than assuming we must be forum non grata :)

Haha, Jazzy! That was hilarious. Will you be making a poll in this thread for the consensus?

I understand how the Internet works. :) I realize that everything posted here is already public, and I see the search engine bots every day. Being linked from Neopets would mean a big influx of users, though, more attention on the forum than we'd normally get through searches and regular lurkers, so I will probably want to go back and remove some info about where I live and a few other personal details, as well as any time I've posted my Neo username, just as a security measure. It's no big deal.

i think it's a great idea! This forum needs some new faces. Things have been quiet here for a while and getting on the fan site board would certainly help with that!

I had a quick look at Jellyneo's forums and nothing seems to have changed much there from what I remember from the last time I looked (although insertion of off-site images in posts seems to have been disabled), though I don't think JN forums have ever really been a hotbed of iniquity. I think NC could be appealing to them as we're a uniquely-themed long-established site with no adverts. Hopefully the forums and Subeta element won't put them off (and if it does then never mind). From what you've said, Jazzy, we've nothing to lose from giving it a shot.

I'm glad you and the rest of the mods are discussing it Jazzy. Mostly because I trust you all to make a good decision for the site, rather than my immediate stance of "Let's do it, I bet it'll be awesome!"

Let us know how it goes!
