Making an image smaller??

Post by Helmcargh »

I made some lj icons into an image to use as a forum set and while it fits within the pixel specifications it came out 139KB in size. I really have no expertise in making/altering images but is there some way I can lower the KB? If so, do I need a specific program like photoshop or something? (I only have paint).

Any help would be great!

Its not that your image needs making smaller, but it is probably if you have an animation on the image, that makes the KB higher, so if your icon is animated it will be a higher KB than say a non-animated version, you might need to take the animation out or slow it down.

It might also be about colour? I remember making a card for JK Rowling it wasn't allowed more than two colours because it was going to be over the KB limit per users card on LeakyLounge.

Yes. Just about any other program out there will give you the option to decrease the filesize by changing the quality of an image, or just be better at it than paint in the first place. I use The Gimp because it's free and because I'm too lazy to learn anything else. If you post the images here someone would be able to change them for you.

A program like photoshop would be very helpful with something like this.

Photoshop allows you to change the image size, but also the KB size. It'll ask you on a scale of 1-12 how big in KB you want your image to be, and you can choose there. The smaller your image and KB size though, the more grainy or pixely it'll look.

The GIMP is probably your best bet. Note that for full-color images with small dimensions (up to, say, 200x200 pixels), PNG is probably the best web format. Filesizes will come out smaller than high-quality JPG and sometimes even smaller than GIF. Much larger than that and PNG becomes less efficient, but it's an icon-maker's dream.

Thanks for your help everyone :P . I downloaded the GIMP and resized it. The actual resizing took less time then it took to download the program which was great.

Always choose the "save for web" option. For jpgs it gives you a scale from 1-100. And it's smaller at 100 quality than it is at 12 quality if you just "save", because it's s-m-r-t like that.
