3kingdoms

Okay, need more players for the MUD I play. Who wants to join?

MUDs are text-based games. Here's a sample from whatever I'm doing right now:
> nw
A hazy tunnel (se,n)
> n
As you move further down the tunnel to the north, you notice an
eerie glow emanating from an alcove on either side of you. Two huge
guards step out in front of you, blocking your path. Their mouths,
the only part you can see of their otherwise armour-clad bodies,
smile and hiss at you. The red glow from their visor helm warns you
that these guards are demon spawn.

> Your concentration breaks, letting your lesser Force shield dissipate away.
taunt
You reach out with the force and taunt Daemon Guard.

You reach out with the force and taunt Daemon Guard.

>
You concentrate on the ebb and flow of the Force about you, searching
for the subtle patterns within the fragile web. With the force of your
will alone you gather the Force about you in a cocoon of pure energy.

You pummeled Daemon Guard into tiny fragments.
You reach out and deflect the attack!
Daemon Guard struck, but did no damage to you.
You feint to the side and then strike with ruby death.
Yes, I am a Jedi. My lightsaber is ruby-colored.

I also rambled a little about 3k here and here.

There are a lot of guilds (and thus a lot of playing styles), some better than others: changeling, jedi, monk, bard, cyborg, juggernaut, necromancer, bladesinger, elemental, knight, priest, breed, gentech, mage, witch, sii.

It is a silly game. What I do is chat with people and wander around killing things.

If I like you well enough, I'll help you get settled in the game. When you make a character, just contact me--I'm either Dyanara, Kaindell, or Chaostrophy. The command to see if someone is online is "finger"--yes yes, you can all finger me all day if you like. I won't even know. So log on, "finger dyanara" (or kaindell or chaostrophy), and if I'm online, "tell dyanara Hi I am from NC save me from the evils of the world!" And also who you are so I know if I like you enough to help you or if I should lead you into some horrible monster's den and leave you there. ^_~

Check out 3k.org for info (the address for connecting to the game is 3k.org, port 3000), and if you like, gameaxle.com has Portal, a free MUD client. I use it, but I may switch to zmud someday. Tinyfugue is another popular client. I don't remember what Mac users use--I used to have Rapscallion on my Macs, though.

Here, I'll go through how to add a Portal profile for 3k:

Open the program and you'll see a blue window with lots of buttons.
Click the "player profiles" button.
Click "add profile."
Enter in a player name (one you'd like for yourself) but no password. (There is a chance the name you want would be taken--you can MSN me or Ariel to ask if it is, or just hope it's not.)
Click the "MUDS" button. Choose 3kingdoms; it should be at the top.
Click the "create new from scratch" button.
Click "close."
Your profile is now selected on the left. Click "login online" to start up 3k.
After you've made your character, you may want to disconnect (in the upper left, the plug/outlet button, to the right of the left-pointing red arrow) and edit your player profile to include the password you chose.

Yes, it is very fun! 3k has consumed nearly all of my free time since I joined.

It has an official site here, which has some more guild info and other things.

If you join, these are some of the things you can kill:
Carebears
Forks, Spoons, and Knives
Barney
Orcs
Mr. Clean
Small children
Disembodied voices
Cabbage

You can also quest for things, and as Ty said, there are many guilds. The array appeals to many different kinds of players - for example, witches don't see combat much; more time is spent tending your garden or doing spells. Breeds do lots and lots of quests, Jedi can heal as well as fight, and it goes on and on.

My utterly biased opinion is that Necromancers is the best guild - ask me or Ty why it's good, and you shall get long rambly answers! But it's got tons of neat things, really nice people (including meee and Ty), AND subguilds, of which there are:
- reapers
- vampires
- liches
- pure necromancers
- werebeasts

Come, join 3k and rejoice in the madness!

(I'm - you guessed it! - Enriana on the game. Feel free to send me tells or, if you so wish, finger me.)

I also play 3k, although I'm relatively new at it and can't give you much info other than it's really fun xD

And I am a Jedi and my name is Arien. That's all I know so far xD But it really is fun, so go play.

I just joined as well, tempted into it by Enri and Ty, naturally. I am, surprisingly, NOT Figment -- I'm Yansa. And I'm confused! But I shall probably be a necromancer because, um, Enri told me to.

Assuming I don't get distracted and never sign in again. That is always a possibility as well. I'm an old time MUSHer, not a MUDer, and so this is all new and intimidating.

So what the hey, yo, I went away for a couple days with computer troubles, and when I come back, NC has not taken over 3k? Most unacceptable. You know, when there's no one to talk to on 3k, I work too hard, and that makes my hands hurt.

That's right--by not signing up for 3k, you're giving me carpal tunnel.

Yup.

I started playing a while ago, but then I kinda forgot about it. I'm Illuen, and I'm a changling. I'm also a T-Rex. I'm hoping that they'll give us guns to make us scarier in the next patch.

I'm being tempted to play this myself, but when I do the run telnet 3k.org 3000 part it tells me it can't be found. Weird, guess I could try it again later.

I can't play right now, too much stuff to do, but if you have a firewall up it might be blocking access to the port. Alternatively, you might not need the port number at all - I didn't specify it (I'm not on Windows, though, so your mileage may vary) and I think I connected properly.

That's funny; the default port for telnet is 23. Of course there are ways around that. The 3000 may just be for aesthetics.

I never logged on last weekend like I said I would, 'cause I'm a jerk, but I do have a login as of a couple of days ago. I'm Rajanikant. (Which is the name of the cleric archer I never got to really play in an RPG.net play-by-post game that evaporated on me....) I haven't done anything yet because of your callous abandonment of your fellow gamers, Ty! I need someone around to hold my hand every step of the way, possibly to the point of reading the documentation to me aloud over the phone! You're down for that, right?

Lots of muds pick ports that just look pretty. In 3k's case, the 3000 is the port for the game itself; there are a couple other ports for beta testing changes and the like, but we don't have access to them, so you have to specify 3000 (I mean, if you specify a port at all--it defaults to the game port if not). It does sound like the port was blocked, or maybe just a momentary hiccup, though 3k's servers are very very stable (we hardly even get lag).

Mr. Black, I apologize most abjectly for my perceived abandonment. Really I do. Now play! If you log on, check to see if Dyanara (me) or Enriana (...Enriana) is on; we often are and we can talk you through stuff. Even better, see if we're on MSN and bug us there.

For general tips, however: once you log in for the first time, you're given the option of going through a tutorial. It covers the basics of mudding, such as how to wear equipment and how to fight things. When you get out of the tutorial (or if you opt out), you'll be in Newbieland.

Go north a little bit to find the donation bin. Like most items, if you "exa bin", you'll see the commands associated with it. "binlist" will show you the contents, and "borrow <x>" will let you get one of the items out. Most of it is just teeny stuff that will only barely help, considering how much you can carry at level 1, but if there is a hobbit pipe, borrow that and wield it. (If you're wielding a rebar from the tutorial, "unwield rebar" and "donate rebar" to get rid of it. You may also have to "unkeep rebar" if you did "keep rebar" or "keep all" first.) The hobbit pipe is the best newbie weapon. If there's not one there, bug me, and I'll get you one.

Either way, once you're out of the tutorial, you can go kill stuff. Head south from the donation bin, through the newbie tower, into the forest. In the forest, you can find ants (easiest), foxes (teeny bit harder), and bandits (teeny bit harder than foxes). Start with ants, rack up as much xp as you can off them. When you kill something, "bury corpse" to get a little bit of hp, sp, and xp. That's a newbie command; the other useful newbie-only command is "salve", which lets you heal a little bit of hp at the cost of sp.

At that point, you should have enough xp to raise stats and perhaps your level. "rcost" is the remote cost command for newbies. At first, I'd recommend raising str and con. Later, you'll raise stats to your guild's recommendations, but str and con are stats that every guild needs (that I know of) at least in small amounts, so you're not hurting yourself. Str will let you hit harder, and con is your hp. To raise them, from anywhere, just type "advance con" or "advance str". To raise your level, when you've run out of stat advancements, from anywhere, type "advance" and then "yes" when it asks if you're sure. (You can reset your stats, too, if you want, later; it just costs xp.)

When you get level 5, you won't be allowed in newbieland anymore, so don't advance past 4 until you're sure you're done. There are quite a few quests in newbieland ("questlist") and you're required to do the Newbie Academy one (down from the center of the academy; it's free if you're level 1, and a bit of money if you're above 1, but just let me know and I'll give you some). If you want a quest to try that's not too hard, but requires some thought (I spent about 45 minutes on it), try The Browning Murders.

That quest and most of the other newbie quests are in the mirrors in newbie tower. From the center of the tower, go up, then north to the mirror area. Read the banner to see which mirror is which; there are other mirrors in other rooms in that area. Most are pretty obvious which quest they're for. Giving specific quest help--qinfo--is against the rules, but I can offer general guidance.

edit: wheee long post. When NC goes down, I may repost this to my LJ if anyone wants it; I'm ladytalon there.

I doubt everyone saw my post before the board went down, so I'm pointing it out, because I can. Instructions on how to be a newbie! Now go be a newbie. ;)

You aren't playing. I know you're not. This is sad.

Seriously, guys, this is the MOST fun. Subeta? Psh. Neopets? Pah! Sleep? Work? 3k blows everything out of the water!

Ty did a very awesome post about being a newbie, and if you sign up, I will be happy!

And no, we do not get any sort of in-game bonus for recruiting you (besides the pleasure of your company). :P It's just THAT great. Now go, sign up! Right now! It's more fun than whatever you're doing.

I don't need more addictions, especially since I'll be leaving NC for a while in October-November.
