I got the Winter theme on the first year with my account. On my old account it took two years to get.

I got the sidebar last year, so I can't add what I did this year/didnt do this year that might have enabled me to get it - but I did miss a day of the advent calendar, on this past Saturday. Oh well.

I got it today too. I can't really think of anything unusual that I did this year and not on the other, except perhaps for zapping my pets, but I doubt that's what triggers the sidebar.

I got the sidebar, no idea why. I didn't miss a day but there were two days when I got green apples instead. I haven't done anything else on the site today.

AvatarLog is doing a survey to try to figure it out - I'm leaning toward the idea that it's just random, but I filled it out anyway

When I checked my sidebars I saw I already had the wintery sidebar, but, I didn't knew there were a purple sidebar below my Tale of WoE sidebar, like if I unlocked it from somewhere but cannot recall Anyone got that sidebar? I guess it popped out there with the twisting revamp of all the site that day, but I'm not sure.

They had Purple Day a while ago. You get it by visiting a Purple pet with a Purple petpet I think.

I wasn't that fond of the items today but the animation was great!

I wish TNT would give some sort of hint about the sidebar. They insist it isn't random but it's really not reasonable to except us to figure it out when we only have one chance a year.

(I got it last year so I can't contribute any data on that score. It's well-established that it has nothing to do with collecting every day, though.)
