Do not use Imageshack or xs.to for avs

Post by Huggles »

Image files hosted there take forever to load and oftentimes render threads unreadable. They interfere with the code we use to restrict the size of avatars. Don't be surprised if you are asked to either delete your avatar/signature or upload them someplace else.

Free Alternatives:
http://photobucket.com/ Still may cause some slowdown, but is okay for now.

Or just search for free image hosting and see what the world wide web has to offer. If you are terribly desperate and lazy, you can email me your av and/or sig and I'll host it myself for as long as I can be bothered.

Huh, wonder what's up with ImageShack...

Well, anyways, Photobucket FTW! :P

Nothing's "up" with Imageshack; it's always sucked. We just recently discussed banning them for avatars, because it's hard for load times here.

I'm guilty of imageshack!

I hope you accept my repentence in the form of xs.to and also virtual lap dances for ALL!

I also like ImageShack but... ok. xs.to seems ok.

It's possible that it's a problem with the code which blocks large avatars- the code seeks the image size, and Imageshack might provide that more slowly than alternatives do.

Thanks, guys!

Argh, I don't know if it's imageshack or not but some threads are still taking ages for me to load. The one on Other Games about the two new pet colours for one, and this very thread for two.

Grarr, smash.

I think it's xs.to slowing things down now. I've noticed the same of late - a thread opens so slowly that I wonder if Imageshack is in there somewhere and check all the avs, but they're all photobucket or xs.to. And this thread (which took ages to load ;0) eventually loaded with Cheese and FiG's avatars not loading, both of which are xs.to. Argh.

No more avatar for me, it seems :P I don't want any silly account.

Edit: Thank you, Ben :)

I've removed a few xs.to avatars, and threads are loading a lot faster. If this affects you: simply reupload them elsewhere, somewhere like photobucket which doesn't seem to be causing problems. Apologies if this is the second time you're reuploading your avatar.

The probable cause is the code we use to restrict the size of avatars. In the case of xs.to and imageshack, it appears to take longer than usual for the script to find out how big the image is to block it. Signatures should be fine.
