Unusual colours
We're going to have a page of unusual colours- for example, the Lennies inspired by real-life birds, pets inspired by specific mythologies, ones with unusual poses. So! If you can think of any and can write a little blurb for them, post them here with a link to the pose's image (images.neopets.com url only, please) and explain why it's unusual. If it's inspired by a real animal, try and say precisely which animal (for example, the Spotted Kau is a Fresian cow, or the Pink Lenny is a flamingo, probably a Phoenicopterus). Write it in a format so it'd be suitable for inclusion on a page just copy-pasted. If a link is helpful (for example, you think the Spotted Tuskanniny is a specific variety of seal, or you think the Desert __ is based off a certain Egyptian god) then try and make it to something like Wikipedia, which is stable, rather than a google image search.
Example:
<img src="http://images.neopets.com/pets/happy/pt ... s_baby.gif">
The Christmas Pteri, rather than being candy-cane striped or having reindeer prongs attached, is based off the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Robin">European Robin</a>. They are often seen around Christmas and appear on Christmas cards.

The spotted gelert is based on the real life dalmation.
the spotted kau is based on the real life Friesian cow.
the spotted koi is based on a real life koi (but someone else should probably write some more because I know very little about fish).
The spotted kougra is based on a real life big cat (someone say which one?)
To complete the spotted set,
But someone else needs to write the blurb.
is notable for not having a glow all over the pet but only in the abdomen, which suggests a resemblance to a real life glowworm (someone be more specific here? I don't know much about insects).
is the only one of the korbats to retain the upside-down hanging circle pose, which is typical of the real life bat which the Neopet species is based upon.
Oh! How could I forget:
The jelly usul has three arms, and it is unknown if this is a mistake or deliberate. TNT has never made any attempt to fix it, but that means relatively little.
Resemblance to Count von Roo?
Resemblance to Dr Sloth.
Resemblance to Nightsteed. I forget quite how that character was involved in the Lost Desert plot.
Resemblance to the Tax Beast.
Some more for which I don't think I can write the blurb: brown, shadow, pink (flamingo), rainbow (parrot of some sort?), mutant (vulture), faerie (peacock, specifically male) lennies. All the maraquan pets need looking over by someone interested in aquatic animals.
Possibly the faerie pteri resembles a bird of paradise? If someone could find a decent picture we coud debate that. I don't know if you want to include the Christmas Zafara (more unusual than most Christmas pets but perhaps not notable enough) and skunk usul (the green ruff and bow are just weird, but perhaps someone else has a useful thing to add). Other tenuous ones:
-jelly shoyru- looks more like blancmange than jelly due to its opaque rather than translucent body.
-Ghost kacheek- is actually redrawn in the happy pose, which no other ghost pet has.
-Island grundo- resemblance to tiki tack man?
-Island bruce- is redrawn to be dancing rather than the usual sitting down pose.
-Halloween cybunny- this pose http://images.neopets.com/pets/beaten/c ... n_baby.gif
-Split eyrie, this pose: http://images.neopets.com/pets/hit/eyri ... _right.gif a stupid inconsistency, where the artist has taken the orange eyrie and forgotten to add any purple to the left leg.

It's worth noting that most Americans don't know what a Friesian cow is--we have Holsteins. Wikipedia says that over in the UK, Friesian and Holstein are different but indistinguishable breeds. (It also says that American cows can be Holstein-Friesian, but hey--still Holsteins, hee.)
Buzzes are fireflies, which are occasionally called "glowworms," but that term can also apply to a lot of other arthropods (including things that are a lot more worm-y, being insect larvae). Fireflies are beetles (in the Lampyridae family, if anyone cares).
Spotted Kougra is a cheetah--has to be, with the tear lines.
I'm not in blurb-mode right now, but hopefully the facts help whoever comes along.

If this helps, the Spotted Tuskaninny is based of the Leopard seal - http://www.coolantarctica.com/gallery/s ... venile.jpg

Hm.
The Maraquan and Tyrannian Acara escaped the latest Revamp, and demonstrate some old battledome poses. Interestingly enough (IIRC), the battledome poses were, at one point, inconsistent between the basic colours, and the Maraquan Acara retains one set, while the Tyrannian retains another.
The Tyrannian Elephante is based off of a woolly mammoth.
The Tyrannian Krawk is based on the Spinosaurus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinosaurus)
The Tyrannian Kougra is arguably based on the Smilodon, or "Saber-toothed tiger".
The Tyrannian Bori bears a striking resemblance to an Ankylosaurus.

I believe the masks of the Desert Blumaroo and Lupe are based on the head of Anubis, the "jackal-headed God of the Dead."
The Pink Lenny is based on the flamingo, and is the only redrawn pink pet.
The brown Lenny has some unusual markings on it not typical of most brown pets. At first glance, I want to say they're derived from some form of raptor, but I wouldn't be able to name a specific breed (and the species isn't exactly raptor-ish, either). I can't tell if TNT just threw those on for show or if it's meant to resemble an actual bird species.
I know most of those aren't useful blurbs, but I wanted to throw them out in case someone else knew more about them than I and could clarify.

Actually, I think one is Set--the Blumaroo? I'm not as up on my Egyptian mythology as I used to be.Officer 1BDI wrote: I believe the masks of the Desert Blumaroo and Lupe are based on the head of Anubis, the "jackal-headed God of the Dead."
Someone probably could go through and do most of the Desert pets, too--the Kau is Hathor, etc.
Perhaps we should mention the Christmas Zafara?
Only pet based off angels. Someone else really ought to right a blurb, though. I can't think of anything at the moment other than it's worth mentioning.
I'm amazed this pet even exists due to TNT's constant mentioning of the "no discussing religion" rule. x3
Edit: Found another one. The Desert Kau's head dress resembles Isis' and Hathor's.

I'll edit if I find more. :3Wikipedia wrote:"After her assimilation of Hathor, Isis's headdress is replaced with that of Hathor: the horns of a cow on her head, and the solar disc between them."

While people are on the topic of unusual Lennies:
The Rainbow Lenny is based on a hybrid Macaw. (I believe it was a specific Camelot Macaw- was it one of these fellows? It was definitely off of this site. The living conditions make me sad. http://www.camelot-macaws.com/Camelot-Jacob.htm http://www.camelot-macaws.com/Camelot-Joseph.htm )

The Tyrannian Draik looks like a Microceratopswith a nose horn and wings. Microceratops were one of the first ceratopsians (most famous member of this group was Triceratops), but unlike most of them, it was small (about the size of a rabbit or small dog) and walked on two legs.
Links for Microceratops:
UK Natural History Museum (linked in the article)
http://internt.nhm.ac.uk/jdsml/nature-o ... roceratops
Some other site which is mostly for dinosaur artwork
http://members.aol.com/DinoPixels/micro.html
Wikipedia has an article too, but it doesn't have a picture. UK Museum's probably the best one, but it's a long URL, if people care about that.
I'd be happy to write more detailed blurbs about the dinosaur and other prehistoric reptile resembling neopets if you dudes want.
I just wanted to make sure the Tyrannian Draik was billed as a microceratops, because they were bipeds. =D
Shroomy has an account of Lennies which are named after the species she based the colours upon.
Chloroptera
(The Red-and-green Macaw or Green-winged Macaw (Ara chloroptera))
Jamaicensis
(The Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis))
Ossifragus
(The Fish Crow (Corvus ossifragus))
Phoenicopteridae
(Family of Flamingos)
She also has the Mutant Lenny on another account:
Cathartidae
(Family of New World Vultures)
And on another of her accounts:
Hydrurga
(The Leopard Seal (Hydrurga leptonyx))
Names in bold are the names of Shroomy's pets. Information in parentheses is what I've found in a quick search."This account is dedicated entirely to the revamp of the Lenny, which I've grown terribly fond of over the past few weeks. Each of my pets are named after their respective bird's scientific name- for example, Jamaicensis is patterned after the red-tailed hawk, or Buteo jamaicensis, and so on and so on."
