NFTs and Neopets

Is anyone else deeply uncomfortable with Neopets having a partnership with folks dealing with NFTs?

If you're not familiar with NFTs, here is a useful article explaining them and their environmental impact.

I feel like it's a mistake for the site to do this - I have posted publicly on Twitter (mentioning @Neopets) to say that I personally don't agree with the decision. I have said that I agree with Jellyneo and Dress to Impress (which are both publicly against the tie-in), though I have also said that I'm not speaking for NC members - you're all entitled to hold your own opinions.

I can't see the point for actual users, since you'd be getting an NFT of a random pet, not one of your own, and there are no other incentives like item codes. So I feel like the only people interested in this would be "investors", and I agree with DTI saying that right now the NFT market functions as a pump and dump scheme rather than a legitimate investment vehicle. I have heard that the NFT type Neopets is going to use is one that's not as environmentally damaging as many out there...but I can't justify any environmental damage for something that brings no-one any tangible benefit.

I'm going to add that the "Valued Neopians" letter is just rubbing me the wrong way. I really hope that start is their idea of a joke because if not we matter as much to them as any "valued customer".

I mean, this is the second time trying this after the first failed. Also the company seems to be homophobic. All I'm getting is visions of Treasure Keepers. I wish there were some way we could just buy out Neopets and have folks at Jelly and Sunny Neo run it instead.

The only people who want this are people who seem to not understand how NFTs work or just don't care.

There's an accusation on Twitter that the person running the NFT Discord server is allowing homophobic slurs and such. I don't know how true this is, though at this point it'd just figure.
