I'm rather chuffed with this, it seems to work in all browsers that I've tried (although my bold text is too dark for the black background, I'll have to fix that):

My technique is to look at the source code on other people's snazzy lookups, to be honest - in fact I used so much of Jazzy's I felt I had to ask her permission.
And when that doesn't work I... (oh the shame)... I throw a strop at my husband until he comes and helps me.
